PWA vs Native App: Which Should Your Startup Ship First?

Progressive web apps quietly got good. In 2026 a PWA can run offline, send push notifications (yes, even on iOS now), and sit on the home screen looking just like a native app, at a fraction of the cost. So do you still need a ‘real’ app? Sometimes. Here's how to tell.

What a PWA can do today

  • Install to the home screen with an icon and splash screen, no App Store.
  • Work offline and sync when the connection returns.
  • Send push notifications on Android and modern iOS.
  • Ship instantly, updates go live the moment you deploy, no review queue.

Where the native app still wins

PWAs have closed most of the gap, but not all of it. Native still wins on deep hardware access (advanced camera controls, Bluetooth, NFC, background location), buttery-smooth heavy animation, and, crucially, discovery and trust. Some users simply won't believe you're a real product until they find you in the App Store.

“A PWA is the fastest way to find out if anyone wants your mobile app, before you pay to build the native one.”

The cost difference is the whole argument

A PWA is one codebase, often the same one as your website, with no app-store overhead. A native (or React Native) app means store listings, review cycles, two platforms to test, and ongoing release management. For an unproven idea, spending that on day one is a bet you don't need to make yet.

Our recommendation by product type

  1. B2B tool used at a desk: PWA, almost always. Nobody downloads a native app to log expenses.
  2. Consumer app, unproven: PWA first to validate, native once retention proves out.
  3. Hardware-heavy or App-Store-discovery-dependent: go native from the start.
  4. Payments / fintech: often both, web for onboarding, native for the trust signal.

The path that wastes the least money

Launch a PWA, watch how people actually use it, and let the data tell you whether a native app is worth it. If users are installing the PWA, returning daily, and asking ‘is there an app?’, that's your signal to build native, with real demand behind the decision instead of a guess.
